At noon today, the governor held a press conference announcing stricter regional stay-at-home orders that will be triggered if intensive care unit capacity in a region falls below 15%. He divided the state into five regions, one of which is northern California. They're saying our region is going to have less than 15% ICU capacity within just a few days. It is not the interest of the state to impact what is already going on with schools, and our capitol watchers are confirming that schools can continue to do what we're already doing. They are working on getting this all in writing. MSUSD will be able to continue to operate our modified learning hub model that we are currently running, so today's announcement doesn't change anything for us, even as our region is moving into having less than 15% ICU capacity. Please reach out to your school's principal or your student's teacher if you have any questions, and continue to abide by best practices to keep you and your loved ones safe during this time.

This morning we confirmed there has been a positive COVID test of a member of our school community. School Nurse Patty reports that it has been determined that there was no close contact between this person and the school staff, students, or families. Please remember to continue to monitor yourself and your family for symptoms and take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, and maintaining a physical distance from those outside your household.

The district will follow state guidelines for schools within counties that are in the purple category by bringing limited voluntary in-person learning hubs back beginning on Monday, November 30. Currently we will target special education students, Title I students, English learners, and Sisson Bridges students for possible in-person learning opportunities. Specialist teachers will make contact with families of these students to discuss scheduling and next steps.

This message is an update about when we will revisit returning to our hybrid learning model. Today, the state moved Siskiyou County into the most restrictive purple (or widespread) COVID tier. As a result, we must continue with the distance-learning-only model into December, and the board will revisit our reopening status at its board meeting on Monday, December 14. We continue to encourage those in our community to practice physical distancing, limit travel where possible, wash hands frequently, and wear masks when around people not in your household.
This message is announcing school lunches available over the upcoming break. On Monday, November 23, families will be able to pick up three school lunches for each of their students at no charge. Lunches will be available that day from 12:30 to 1:00. You must call by Thursday or Friday of this week to let your school's office staff know that you will pick up the three lunches on Monday, November 23.
In response to a positive COVID-19 test at the Boys & Girls Club and with the safety of our students and staff in mind, we are sad to have to announce we are moving to distance learning again. This has been a difficult decision that is based on the rise in new COVID-19 cases in Siskiyou County over the last ten days. As of today, Monday Nov. 9th, we have 314 confirmed cases, 51 of which are active. Shasta County to the south of us and Jackson County to the north of us have had even greater spikes in new cases. To help prevent a similar large spike in cases in our community, we are closing both of our campuses to in-person learning through the end of Thanksgiving vacation (November 27). All students will participate in daily live interaction with their teachers in full distance learning mode. Your child’s teacher will contact you with specific details about what to expect for the next two weeks before Thanksgiving vacation. We remain committed to the health and safety of our students, staff, and all their families.

During the September 22 board meeting, the board voted to move to Step 3 of our 4-step reopening plan on October 12. This means that on October 12, we will pivot to hybrid schedules with all students participating in a mixture of face-to-face, on-campus instruction and distance learning. Families will also have the option to continue participating solely in distance learning with no face-to-face, on-campus instruction. We will continue to communicate information to our families about the details of this move, but we wanted to get this initial information out to families so you can set the date on your calendars. We know that you need a wealth of information as soon as possible to plan effectively on your end, and we are working hard to provide it. Please contact your school's principal if you have any questions.

We have been working tirelessly since July 6 on our plans for coming back to school in August. The superintendent has met on multiple occasions with staff members, union leaders, parent leaders elected to the schools' site councils (in addition to those who volunteered to be part of the conversation), and once with the school board. Today, the governor made some significant announcements about reopening schools that we are taking into consideration. The superintendent will present a one-page phased opening matrix to the board for approval this coming Tuesday evening, July 21, at the board meeting starting at 7:00 p.m. You can expect to begin seeing regular updates through these channels as the August 24 start date approaches. We hope you are staying well, and we will keep sending out updates as they arise.

At last night's board meeting (5/13/2020), the trustees adopted the following grading policy, which differs slightly from the first reading a month ago. If you have any questions, please check with your child's teacher or your school's principal. The policy is pasted here for your convenience: Grade TK-3 teachers will continue their report cards as best as they can given the limitations with distance learning. Grade 4-5 teachers will use credit, no credit, and credit + in recording student grades. Grade 6-8 teachers will continue using A-F while taking into account the special circumstances and effects of the COVID-19 virus on student progress.

Earlier this month, the school board had its first reading regarding the grading policies of the district in the context of our distance learning model. In line with guidance from the California Department of Education, students’ grades can only go up from where they were when we switched to distance learning; the grades cannot go down. For questions regarding your child’s specific grade level and grading, please reach out to your child’s teacher or principal.
We continue to refine our distance learning model, and to do that, we need your feedback too. Please take a moment to respond to the short survey at the following link. Thank you! https://forms.gle/7YuRDm9jmAcMrTSr6
